KEY Scholarship

Unlocking opportunities to attend HBCUs, one key at a time.

The KEY Scholarship Fund was established in 2022 to offer one-time scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 each to Massachusetts students who attend a Historically Black College or University for a minimum of one year. Applicants must display financial need, academic achievement, a commitment to social justice and equity, a strong work ethic, and leadership qualities. The first KEY Scholarship will be awarded in 2024.

 

General Qualifications

Applicants must be:

  • a student attending an accredited undergraduate Historically Black College or University in the United States and must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 hours).

  • pursuing a bachelor’s degree for the first time. Students in one-year or two-year certificate or associate’s degree programs do not qualify.

  • a United States citizen or noncitizen who has a current lawful presence in the United States.

  • a resident of Massachusetts and/or a graduate of a high school in Massachusetts.

Academic Achievement

Applicants should:

  • have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale or a 4.0 or higher on a 5.0 scale.

  • be enrolled in a demanding course of study.

  • demonstrate skilled and creative writing.

 

Financial Need

Qualifying applicants will demonstrate one of the following:

  • an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) from the FAFSA Student Aid Report that is $10,000 or less

  • a low to moderate parent/guardian Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)

  • extenuating financial circumstances

 

Citizenship and Character

Strong applicants would:

  • demonstrate a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society both present and future.

  • be involved in a balance of community/civic, school, and work activities.

  • pursue goals and aspirations with integrity, resolution, self-discipline, and judgment.

  • demonstrate leadership characteristics and/or assumed leadership positions.

 

Application Process and Timeline

  • An online application will be available in spring 2024. The deadline to submit applications will be May 31, 2024.

  • Scholarship recipients will be notified by July 1, 2024.

 

Scholarship Selection Process

The KEY Scholarship Committee will review all eligible applications between June 1-30, 2024. The selection committee is comprised of current and former educators representing PK-12 and higher education.
